Toshiba Portege M100 is a powerful and sleek machine with Intel Centrino 1.2GHz cpu, 512 MB RAM, 40GB HDD, Intel 855 GM Graphics,
24X CDR/W-DVD combo, 2 USB ports, Firewire, IrDA, on-board Intel Pro/100 ethernet, SD card slot and Wi-fi powered by a 4000mAh Li
+ battery, which lasts for
more than 3 hours. It's LCD is 12.1" and it weighs 1.5 kgs. For device details see
lspci.
I'm running Debian Stable with kernel 2.6.8-2-386
- Works: ACPI, X (I'm using 1024x768 at 24 bit color depth), sound (AC 97), USB (mouse, digicam), Ethernet (Intel Pro/100), Toshiba fnfx keys, Power button shutdown,
PCMCIA (I'm using a CDMA wireless internet card), Firewire, Wi-fi.
- Doesn't work: Suspend (echo "3" > /proc/acpi/sleep couldn't stop mysqld)
- Partially works: IrDA (shows irda0 in ifconfig, didn't try further)
- Didn't try: External VGA, SD Card, Modem
How do I go about the installation:
Download Debian net-install image from here for i386 arch.
Burn the ISO on a CD.
Change the boot device sequence. Hold the ESC key while switching on the laptop and then press F1 to enter setup. Press T to go to boot
preferences. Select the one which puts CDROM before HDD. Save and exit to reboot.
Edit the kernel parameters at GRUB menu. Add acpi=on and vga=791.
Installation is not at all tricky. No special configuration required. Network gets configured automagically and it downloads packages from
internet. X configuration is again simple once you select display type as LCD and configuration expertise level as MEDIUM.
Mouse, Sound, Keymap, ACPI, USB, Network, PCMCIA etc work out of the box.
For Toshiba keys, do
# modprobe toshiba_acpi
# apt-get install fnfxd
Here are few configuration files and outputs of some commands:
